Clipper Secures 10 Year Deal With Asda/George At Its New Portcentric Super-Centre At Teesport

Clipper, the UK’s leading specialist in high value and retail logistics – has announced the creation of a portcentric super-centre in Wynyard near Teesport. The facility has a footprint of 350,000 sqft but with mezzanines the operational space will be well over 1M sqft. The site is scheduled to be open by August 2012, with the creation of hundreds of jobs.

As its first customer for the new facility, Clipper has secured a groundbreaking 10 year deal with ASDA to provide portcentric solutions for the George Clothing business.

The bespoke solution for the retailer includes the installation of a three-tier hanging garment mezzanine and hanging conveyors, with the solution requiring over 600,000 sq ft at go-live.

In 2009 Clipper opened its first deconsolidation centre in Darlington as part of a bespoke solution created for the George Clothing business. The current operation handles more than 55 million units per year and the systems that Clipper has implemented have created a solid foundation for further growth when operations are transferred to the new site.

Ian Stansfield, Distribution Director at ASDA, commented: “Clipper has proven themselves to be an invaluable partner to our business and the success of the bespoke solution they created in the north east in 2009 has brought about significant cost and efficiency savings to our operation.

“On the strength of this success, and our growing clothing business, we have taken the unprecedented step of signing this ten year contract for Clipper to provide portcentric solutions at the new Clipper Wynyard Portcentric Centre.”

Tony Mannix, Managing Director at Clipper, concluded: “We are extremely proud of the agile and responsive solution we created for the George Clothing business at our existing north east site and are delighted that Asda have chosen to recognise its success by confirming our relationship will continue for at least the next ten years in our new facilities.

“

As well as providing ASDA/George with their bespoke solution, our new centre at Wynyard, near Teesport will also offer other retailers – particularly those new to global sourcing and e-fulfilment – the opportunity to take advantage of portcentric best practice through a shared-user proposition without major capital investment.

“These developments perfectly complement our retail & e-fulfilment capabilities and confirm our position as the UK’s leading retail logistics specialist.”

Steve Parkin, Chairman of Clipper, concluded: “Our belief that portcentric solutions are integral to the future of the retail logistics industry is represented by our £40m investment in this new super-centre for Teesport and this move further cements our position as the UK’s leading provider.”
