Clipper celebrated at Motor Transport Awards

Clipper have been acknowledged at this year’s Motor Transport Awards, winning the Partnership Award alongside longstanding customer Superdry. The two companies have worked together since 2013, and have introduced far reaching improvements throughout the retailer’s supply chain.

Tony Mannix, CEO of Clipper said: “We’re thrilled to have been honoured in the Partnership category at the Motor Transport Awards. We’ve worked closely with Superdry for the last 5 years, and the teams have done some incredible work to transform, develop and fine-tune the supply chain operations. It’s fantastic to have this hard work recognised, and having recently signed a new extended contract, we’re looking forward to continuing this success.”

Together, the two businesses have established a joint Clipper and Superdry facility in Burton- on-Trent. They have created and implemented a large number of initiatives under the Continuous Improvement Framework, developing an agile, and effective operation, enabling Superdry to continue providing a world-class service for their customers.

The winners were announced at a ceremony in London on the 4th July.

Clipper invests in the drivers of tomorrow with innovative training initiative

Clipper Logistics plc is pleased to announce the launch of an initiative which aims to help its warehouse employees be trained as drivers, allowing them to further their careers and progress within the business. Warehouse operatives are being given the chance to participate in a 12-month training programme, which will see them gain their class 2 driving licence, meaning they can drive Clipper’s HGV’s.

The “Revolve” initiative was launched at the Swadlincote site, but will be rolled-out to Clipper employees nationwide over the coming year. The initiative is part of Clipper’s commitment to plugging the UK’s shortage of qualified drivers, and aims to encourage employees to achieve their ambitions, and to grow their skillset.

The syllabus includes modules on maintenance, health & safety, customer service and, of course, driving, meaning that graduates of the scheme will have the well-rounded skills to represent Clipper and their clients. In addition, Clipper will be working with Driver First Assist (DFA) on the initiative, a scheme which aims to promote first-aid training to drivers, so that in the event of an accident, they can provide immediate assistance prior to the emergency services arriving.

Mick Doe, Clipper’s Transport Operations Director said: “This is the latest initiative from Clipper that shows our commitment to training and improving the skillset of our people.  Revolve has seen fantastic demand, and we’re proud to be launching a training programme that can have such positive effects. We’re always looking at the next step, and we’re already in the process of looking at offering Class 1 driver training as an option in the future. Alongside our driver simulators, which were launched last year, Clipper has proven itself to be at the forefront of professional HGV operation.”

Matthew Yates, Director of Driver First Assist (DFA) added: “Clipper have demonstrated exceptional forward-thinking with their Revolve initiative, and we’re proud to be working with them on an important element of training. Our aim is helping to provide a first response and crucial first aid assistance on the UK’s roads, ahead of attendance by the emergency services. Those first few minutes after an incident are vital, so to be able to offer training to Clipper’s Revolve participants, is a great association for us to have and a definite step in the right direction.”

Clipper’s initiative will be rolled-out across its sites from Q2 and will have training modules around the UK. In addition to Clipper’s in-house driver training, a number of third party organisations will also contribute, including DFA and SB Training, who will deliver practical skills training.

Clipper CEO Named Supply Chain Leader of the Year at Retail Week Awards

Tony Mannix, Chief Executive Officer of Clipper Logistics plc has been named as the Supply Chain Leader of the Year at the industry flagship Retail Week Supply Chain Awards.

The announcement was made at the awards gala dinner, celebrating retailers, suppliers and individuals who are driving progress in the retail supply chain industry. The judges, which included leading names from the likes of The John Lewis Partnership, Dreams, Kingfisher and Boohoo.com, picked Tony from a select group of supply chain innovators.

Clipper has initiated many innovative retail solutions during Tony’s time on the board, including industry-leading initiatives such as the Boomerang™ reverse logistics solution, and the award-winning ClickLink™ initiative, a joint venture set up alongside The John Lewis Partnership.

Tony joined Clipper in 2006, however, his career in retail logistics spans more than three decades. A Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Logistics & Transport, he has a wealth of experience and equally importantly he has a true passion for retail.

Speaking about the recognition, Tony said: “I’m absolutely honoured and humbled by the kind words of the judges, and I am delighted to accept this award. As this is the first time a non-retailer has been awarded this accolade it is very pleasing that the “retail solution focus” of Clipper has been recognised in this way – I feel like we have been accepted into the retail community as an equal. I’ve been proud to help drive innovation in our sector, and help the retail industry evolve and keep ahead of the rapid pace of change. I have the same drive and passion for supply-chain now, as when I set out in this industry some time ago, and look forward to helping Clipper lead the way in the years to come.”

“We’ve become known for our unique mix of ability, and agility, which has been crucial to our success. This has led us to work with some true retail luminaries, and being part of delivering solutions that help retailers prosper, whilst providing customer service excellence, has been the defining high-point of my career to date.”

In 2014, Tony was part of the team that led the business through an IPO. Since then, the business has made several major acquisitions and consolidated its position at the forefront of UK retail logistics.

Acquisition of RepairTech Limited

Clipper Logistics plc is pleased to announce the acquisition of the entire issued share capital of RepairTech Limited. RepairTech is a specialist provider of consumer electronic repair services based in Southam, Warwickshire.

The effective handling of returned products is important to retailers and manufacturers to both protect margins and minimise working capital.  Clipper’s market-leading “Boomerang” service is designed to rapidly recover and return to saleable stock products returned by consumers.

The Boomerang service suite was extended by the acquisition of Servicecare Support Services Ltd in December 2014, and the acquisition of RepairTech enables the Group to provide a comprehensive range of returns management services across the whole spectrum of apparel, general merchandise and electronic and electrical equipment.

The Group anticipates that the activities undertaken by RepairTech will enhance the range of services provided to existing Clipper customers, as well as attracting new clients to the Group.

RepairTech was established in 1999 by the current Managing Director, Richard Costello. It is consistently profitable, and reported underlying earnings before interest and tax of £644k on revenues of £3.2m in its unaudited financial statements to March 2017. The acquisition will be immediately earnings-enhancing to Clipper.

Consideration is £2.5m in cash, with a further £0.5m deferred for 12 months. Assets acquired with the business include net cash balances of approximately £0.3m. The consideration is being funded from Clipper’s existing cash and bank facilities.

All members of the senior management team of RepairTech, including Managing Director Richard Costello, will remain with the business to continue to deliver significant organic growth both in its own right, and across the wider Clipper customer base.

Steve Parkin, Executive Chairman of Clipper, commented:

“RepairTech is a robustly profitable and cash generative business. The acquisition will enable us to offer existing and prospective customers of both RepairTech and the Group a truly comprehensive range of returns management services. We welcome the employees and management team of RepairTech to the Clipper group, and look forward to continuing to build the breadth and depth of our services and customer base”.
